The
University of Hartford Magnet School strives for excellence in
achievement from PreK to Grade 5. We provide educational experiences
that nurture the whole student as a learner. UHMS students are
challenged to set goals for themselves and supported by the school
community to achieve their goals.
We emphasize the school's theme of “Learning through the Multiple
Intelligences” each Friday at our Friday Family Meeting, where we
present integrated learning through the integration of the arts. We
showcase student learning and develop a community culture of celebration
of academic and artistic accomplishments. Teaching integration
collaborations between grade level teams and teachers of the arts
provide opportunities for students to be engaged in meaningful learning
experiences that connect multiple content areas.
Our University of Hartford partnership is meaningful, rich and supports
efforts to achieve our school’s mission. The link with the School of
Education provides a "lab" for student teachers and interns entering the
field of education. The hands-on experience provided to the University
students supports their development as well as enriches our students and
teachers.
The Hartt School of Music and Dance students and professors provide our
students with music and dance lessons that culminate in performances
that rival professionals. Our student athlete-mentoring program matches
college students with elementary students in a mentoring relationship.
Our students participate in college-sponsored events to promote an
interest in reading, science and general scholarly effort. The
collaboration is unique and truly rewarding to all.
As we celebrate 10 years of commitment to students, the UHMS community
continues to work collaboratively to shape our goals. Ultimately we
strive to create a student-centered community that produces joyous
learners, and eliminates the achievement gap, a mission upon which our
school is based. Students leave our school prepared for success in
whatever they pursue.
Sincerely,
Tim Barber
